Egg Basket Artwork

In this work I wanted to try and convey the emotional value this object has for its owner. The basket represents a turbulent time in her relationship with her late husband which resulted in her taking herself on a solo trip to Spain on a tight budget.

The egg basket was woven for her by a woman in the village where she stayed. This item has always sat on her kitchen counter, used every day by her family as her children were growing up.

For this piece I decided to paint the object in its usual surroundings, charged with the domestic life it has witnessed. The basket looms in the foreground, bold and dominant casting a shadow and lines directing you into the painting, I painted the woven grass in the basket in detail to show the ornate complexity of the item and keep it as the viewer’s focal point.
