New safeguarding product launched by Liberty Mutual Insurance to help ‘make children’s lives safer’
21 June 2016, LONDON - Liberty Mutual Insurance (LMI), the commercial division of Liberty Specialty Markets, is working exclusively with leading children's charity NSPCC to launch Liberty Safeguarding. This new, innovative insurance product, which marks LMI’s entry into the safeguarding sector, has been designed to help organisations minimise risks to children by assessing each organisation’s operations and providing them with resources to help raise safeguarding standards.
LMI has designed the product for organisations that work with children. It combines traditional insurance protection with a range of risk management tools and frameworks that promote safeguarding standards and ultimately aim to protect children.
Liberty Safeguarding is available to all sectors which come into contact with children including residential children’s homes, sports and youth organisations, and foster care providers. It can cover a wide range of insurance needs including property, civil liability and crisis containment. It also includes access to specialist research and resources, an NSPCC helpline, counselling services and safeguarding training. The product is available through LMI’s broker network.
According to NSPCC, current estimates place the cost to society of child abuse at £3.2 billion a year in the UK. Insurers have historically spent many millions defending claims, however with this new initiative, LMI intends to work with its clients on their safeguarding policies and procedures in order to mitigate risks to children as well as future potential losses.
Nick Mortimer LMI’s Head of Liability Lines - Commercial said: “Abuse is not just an historical issue: according to the latest NSPCC research 500,000 vulnerable children suffer abuse or neglect a year. Liberty Safeguarding aims to take a proactive approach to ensure organisations have the most robust safeguarding standards possible. We believe our unique approach to safeguarding will help to make children's lives safer.”
Peter Wanless, Chief Executive of NSPCC, said: “We are pleased to have worked with Liberty to develop this important safeguarding product. This is a positive new initiative which will help keep more children safe.”
