Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition captures scientific discovery

Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner, and Yann Sainty were overall winners for their photograph Andromeda, Unexpected that captures a huge plasma arc next to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). The image has prompted scientists, in a transnational collaboration, to investigate the giant object, which could be the largest structure near us in the Universe.

The winning image will be on display alongside the category winners in the accompanying exhibition, opening at the National Maritime Museum on Saturday 16th September 2023.
