Fatima Khan - the women in green

Tell us about 'Woman in green'

This piece explores the identity of a woman who is restrained from liberation by the hierarchy in society. In rural and even higher societies,  men are considered to be dominant as they have more power than women. It says when a woman is married, she should forget about being free and should always commit to her husband commands. If she doesn’t, her husband has the full authority to kill her in the name of ‘honour’. So many women and young girls have been brutally murdered for having a voice, which was taken away from them when they were forced to commit to something they had never wished for. So many women and underage girls get raped every minute but no one seems to care because they are ‘just women’. This piece of work depicts the pain and agony women go through in order to be part of society. They are obliged to do this, if they do not then society considers her to be a sin to the religion and for that she must die.
