For Polina Smirnova, the process of painting is a dance between staying true to the idea and being ready to let it go. Pushing off of photographic realism of her subjects, she aspires to reveal their essence, whilst avoiding a direct representation. Drawing inspiration from her own life experiences, Polina is interested in recreating the atmosphere of the intense and peculiar moments, where the light, in its broad range of forms, is the cause of the utmost captivation. The enchantment of the sunlight leaking through the trees or the light so strong one can almost feel its pressure are among the occurrences Polina seeks to capture. Groping an instant, when paint becomes a palpable object, she develops her paintings like a film.
