As if judging a trial before knowing the crime, a fragmented story is depicted in Naomi Boiko-Stapelton’s work through the use of reoccurring symbolism. These seemingly incongruent moments fuse to unveil previously concealed or forgotten memories. The sensitive iconography acts as a personal methodology to come to terms with loss, inviting ever-evolving reinterpretations of an intimate mythology. In the work, negative space creates room for ambiguity, forming a liminal space where the images become open to interpretation.
The titles Boiko-Stapelton uses are mediated from bittersweet snippets of conversations she shared with her Mum before she passed, and now late-night discussions with her younger sister. The imagery is inspired by these, not as a literal depiction, but an embodiment of the sensations that memories provoke but cannot be put into words.
People emerge from the paintings as other worldly beings, perhaps they are ghosts, gods, or vessels. The sensitive touch of watercolour embodies this unearthly presence, as if on the verge of simultaneously appearing and disappearing. It is unpredictable to paint with and every touch is permanent, there is a sensitivity in watercolours ability to hint at a forms perceptible outline without reducing it to a fixed image or narrative.
Boiko-Stapleton completed her BA in Fine Art Painting at Brighton University in 2022 and has exhibited in group exhibitions in the UK and abroad. Her work resides in private collections across the UK and abroad in Holland and the USA.
