Simon Yates Artwork

The door being from the modernist era speaks about the aspiration to be part of a modern society. The idea is that most people can own a piece of art in the form of prints or merchandise or more specifically fridge magnets. This speaks about the commodity of imagery and the aspiration to own a great work of art.

Here the artwork becomes the fridge door with the magnet, but it is also the fridge magnet with the image of the fridge door with the fridge magnet on it that has the image of the inside of the fridge which you can only see if you open the fridge door. The question is can you touch the artwork? You need to open the door to get the full experience of the artwork but when you do, it’s an empty fridge and it’s also only a painting of an empty fridge. So the work becomes self referencing, looking in on itself and at itself. What’s real and what’s not?

The piece only ever remains an aspiration.
